Joseph Mallord William Turner, The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838

National Gallery, London

Date: 1839
Technique: Oil on canvas, 91 x 122 cm

The 98-gun ship HMS Temeraire was one of the last second-rate ships of the line to have played a distinguished role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The painting depicts HMS Temeraire being towed by a paddle-wheel steam tug towards its final berth in Rotherhithe in south-east London in 1838 to be broken up for scrap.

Launched in 1798, HMS Temeraire served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, mostly on blockades or convoy escort duties. She fought only one fleet action, the Battle of Trafalgar, but became so well known for her actions and her subsequent depictions in art and literature that she has been remembered as "The Fighting Temeraire".
